Studio Nocturne was founded in 2023 by Neal Andrew Barber - AIA, LEED Green Associate

Neal is a born and raised Seattleite. His formative years were spent in the forests, islands, and mountains of western Washington, skiing, mountaineering, and kayaking through landscapes that became the foundation of his sensibility long before architecture school. His education led him beyond the Pacific Northwest: first to Colgate University, where he studied architectural history and taught outdoor education, then to UC Berkeley's College of Environmental Design, where he earned his Master of Architecture and, as a Branner Traveling Fellow, traveled the Alps researching mountain huts. Neal frequently ventures into the varied western Washington landscapes since relocating back home, but now he is often joined by his family.

He built his professional experience at Marlon Blackwell Architects, Olson Kundig, and Northwest Studio, where he deepened his understanding of craft, materiality, and the discipline of building.

design ethos

Studio Nocturne takes its name from a 19th century genre of first music and then painting which, depicted common scenes at night, dusk, or in conditions of low and uncertain light. Detail dissolves. Form softens into tone. What remains is mood, atmosphere, and the barest suggestion of what is there. The ordinary is stripped of its familiarity and made strange, even beautiful, in a way it never quite is in daylight. The point was not to depict the world but to re-present it: to show the viewer something they had seen a thousand times as though for the first time.

creative origins

The studio works within a lineage of picture-making: the English Picturesque, which taught that land could be composed like a picture; Nocturnes, which paired the handedness of Impressionism with the murkiness of the evening; American Realism, which found its subjects in ordinary places; and the New Topographics, which looked plainly at the landscapes we actually inhabit. We bring this same intention to architecture. The plan drawings and or specifications of our buildings are not ends in and of themselves, but means for the experience of a place: the quality of morning light across a kitchen counter, the way a threshold frames a view, the feeling of a room that is exactly the right size for the life lived in it. Architecture is a setting and a frame for that life. The drawings, the dimensions, the material selections — all of it is in service of a single outcome: the memory of place that, years from now, will remain indelible the facts fade away.
